How it works
The total day count is the exact number of 24-hour days between the two midnights. The calendar breakdown walks the difference back through years, months, and days:
- Total days = end date − start date (end date itself not included)
- Weeks = total days ÷ 7, with the remainder in days
- Calendar breakdown = whole years + whole months + remaining days, borrowing across real month lengths and leap years
If you enter the dates in reverse order, the tool simply swaps them — the gap is always positive.
Example
From 2026-01-01 to 2026-11-01:
- Total: 304 days = 43 weeks + 3 days
- Calendar: 0 years, 10 months, 0 days
A trickier case: 2026-01-31 → 2026-03-01 is 29 days — the breakdown borrows across February's 28 days automatically.
What this calculator does not include
It measures calendar dates only — no business-day filtering (weekends/holidays stay counted), no time-of-day precision, and no timezone adjustments. For loan interest day counts or payroll, use your institution's official convention.
FAQ
Does the day count include both start and end dates?
No. This calculator counts the gap between the two dates: from Jan 1 to Nov 1 is 304 days, counting Nov 1 as the endpoint. If you need to include both endpoints (e.g. counting every day of a trip), add 1 to the result.
How are leap years handled?
Automatically. The count uses real calendar dates, so Feb 29 in leap years is included exactly once when it falls in the range.
What does the calendar breakdown mean?
It expresses the gap in whole years, months, and days on the calendar — the way a person would count it — alongside the raw total of days and weeks.
